A loud crashing startled me awake, and I leapt from the couch. Nellie, excited that I was standing, sat in front of me, leash on the floor, wagging her tail.

As the fog cleared in my brain, I looked around the apartment to find the source of the noise.

It didn’t take long.

Nellie had obviously decided she wanted to go for a walk and fished her leash off the desk, knocking several books, papers, and pens onto the floor. “It’s three in the morning, dog!” I said, my heart still racing. “And it’s freezing outside.”

She looked at me, her tongue hanging out the side of her mouth, panting in anticipation.

Since dogs don’t speak English, I’m sure she interpreted what I said as, “Why yes! You’re a smart dog, and we should go for a walk. It’s not cold at all, and your fur will protect you, so let’s go.”

She was insistent. I grabbed her leash and took her for a short walk in the snow. While I wasn’t happy about it at first, I had to admit I did enjoy the quiet serenity of that winter night. The only sound I heard was my boots crunching in the snow.

Nellie dug her nose into a small pile of snow, then turned to look at me with a small triangle of white on her nose.

“Goof,” I said.

She must have taken that as a cue. She danced around on her leash with unbridled joy. I reminded myself I needed to spend more time every now and then thinking like a dog.

By then, I seemed to have caught a second wind. While it was cold that night, I was bundled up well enough to keep warm. The moon lit up the town in a silvery blue light. Nellie and I walked down the street and wandered through the neighborhood bordering the bar.

I thought about what Lynn had told me the day before about the choices we make. There was something about New York in the wintertime, when snow would blanket the city, seeming to remind its inhabitants that for all of human ingenuity, Mother Nature still rules the day. A good blizzard could bring one of the greatest cities on Earth to a standstill.

A snowstorm in Maple Creek, even one that shut the town down for a day or two, didn’t seem so pronounced. Things moved at a different pace in Maple Creek, and if the world shut down for a while, it didn’t seem like such a big deal.

Nellie stopped to smell something in a bush, then plopped down on her back, rolling around in whatever it was she smelled. Either that or she was making dog snow angels. Who knew?

I knew if we didn’t head back home soon, morning was going to feel like it would come extra early. Grams had cancelled one breakfast; she wasn’t going to cancel any more.

When we got back home, I stopped. There was a set of fresh tire tracks in the parking lot and footprints leading to the stairs to my apartment.
